Mahwah Travel Softball Program
The Mahwah Softball Travel Program is designed as a supplement to the Mahwah Youth Softball Recreation Program. The goal of the travel program is to increase player skill development in a more competitive environment. Because of the increased competitiveness of travel softball, the program is intended for players who have a higher level of interest in the sport and are prepared to dedicate more time to the sport for practices and games.
The Mahwah Rec Softball Travel Program assembles teams of Mahwah youth by age for the spring, summer, and fall seasons. The ages are grouped as follows as of January 1st:
14U-14 and under
12U-12 and under
10U-10 and under
3rd/4th grade-3rd and 4th graders, 10 and under by Aug 1st
Other than 3rd/4th grade, each division uses a January 1st cutoff. To be eligible your daughter needs to be of age before January 1st of the Summer season year.
Player Expectations:
Since the travel teams compete against teams outside of Mahwah, competition tends to be stronger and parents should note the following obligations before committing to join a travel team:
Team Selection:
The players selected for travel teams are chosen via a tryout (if necessary) where a player’s skills are evaluated in the areas of hitting, fielding, throwing, and running.
Team rosters will be posted on the Mahwah Rec Softball website when final decisions are made.
Cost:
There is a travel registration fee to participate in a travel team. The 2023 travel fees will be posted here and will be collected after the teams are selected.
Tryouts:
Tryouts dates for the 2023 Mahwah Travel softball (10U, 12U & 14U) are TBD.
Tryouts for 3rd/4th grade team will be held with the U10 eligible players.

Player Expectations:
Since the travel teams compete against teams outside of Mahwah, competition tends to be stronger and parents should note the following obligations before committing to join a travel team:
- The Mahwah Softball Travel Program is designed as a supplement to the Recreation Program for softball. Any child who wishes to play travel softball must play in the town recreational league.
- There are three seasons for travel softball. The spring league runs from early April through May with one or two games generally played on Friday evenings, Saturday or Sunday afternoons. The spring league is used primarily as preparation for the summer league. Generally, the summer league, which runs from early June to the end of July, has two to three games each week on weekday evenings. The fall league runs from September through October and like the spring league is used as preparation for the next year.
- Although it is expected that families will have other obligations and periodically take vacations, parents should consider that tournaments and the season begins in late-May and can run through the end of July. It is expected that any travel team player will attempt to make most, if not all, practices and/or games, and if she is unable to make a game or practice will supply advance notice to the coaches. Although coaches will determine distribution of playing time, it is common practice that playing time is influenced by a player’s attendance at practices and games.
- If a player in the Mahwah travel program plans to play on another team not affiliated with the town, such as a club team, it is expected she make the Mahwah team the priority. If that commitment can't be made, it's suggested the player not try out for the Mahwah travel program.
- Every age group is involved in a Memorial Day weekend tournament.
